Bottle Gourd Dessert – Surakkai Javvarisi Payasam

Bottle Gourd, like watermelon and cucumber, is a must have during summer in our day-to-day life. They help fight scorching heat, cool the body and improve digestion.

The bottle gourd is not something kids, and adults will be desiring  to eat, must admit, this is a little less tasty vegetable. Blah!

Ok, here we come with a super sweet dish recipe that would definitely be relished by one and all. This easy to cook dish can appear in your dining table more often, as a dessert after heavy meals especially during summer seasons.

Bottle gourd – 1

Milk – 1 liter

Sago rice (Javvarisi)  – 100 g

Sugar – as needed

Milkmaid (optional) – as needed

Salt – a small pinch

Ghee – 3 teaspoons

Method:

  1. Soak sago rice in a small cup of boiled milk for 5-10 minutes.
  2. Boil milk and add the soaked sago rice. Let it cook well.
  3. Meanwhile, cook grated bottle gourd in ghee till the vegetable is soft and well cooked.
  4. Add the cooked veg into the milk sago mixture and leave it in a simmer flame to let them all blend well. Add sugar as per your taste.
  5. Then when everything is done, just before you turn off the stove, add salt and milkmaid. Mix them well.
  6. If you use milkmaid, lessen the amount of sugar.
