A recipe that seems to be a favourite of major Mallika’s characters :-). So, We come here with the recipe of the same on the popular demand. 😛

Our assumption is that most people would know this recipe as it is really a very common side dish with idlis J

(I don’t know am just laughing hard as I am typing all these).

It is a traditional chutney recipe taught by my mother-in-law, and she was very particular that I learn it well as it is my husband’s favorite. 🙂 (Pongada ningalum unga chutney-umnu nenachen when she taught me, as I did not like the taste as much as I did Tomato chutney :-P)

Ok, fine, here we go.

Ingredients:

Onion – 2 or Shallots – 1 cup

Tomato – 1 (preferably big)

Garlic pods – 4

Red chillies – 2-3 or as per your taste

Tamarind – very little

Curry leaves – 5-6

Urad dal –  as needed for seasoning

Mustard –  as needed for seasoning

Oil – as needed for seasoning

Method:

  1. Grind onion, tomato, garlic, tamarind and red chillies into a fine paste.
  2. Heat oil in a kadai, crackle mustard and urad dal, splutter curry leaves and add the ground content.
  3. Cook on a medium flame until the mixture is cooked well and oozes out oil in the walls of the kadai.

Note: Traditionally, it is prepared by using a very little amount of tamarind pulp, but we normally don’t use it, so it is your choice to use or do away with tamarind in this recipe.
